Chapter 12
Tyler positioned his truck bed so that it was facing east. He looked over at Amanda. She was watching him with an excited smile, the soft glow of the dash illuminating her face. âHere we are,â he announced, cutting the engine.
âIâm so glad you suggested this!â Amanda had the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old on Christmas morning. She opened her door and jumped from the cab, pulling the seat forward to retrieve a large blanket and a cooler.
âAmanda, leave that. Iâll get it in a minute.â Tyler pulled a blanket from behind his seat along with a hemp tote bag filled to the brim with snacks that Amandaâs mother had packed for them.
âThanks, Tyler, but itâs not that heavy. I got it.â
She closed the door, carrying the supplies around to the back of the truck. He opened the tailgate and offered her his hand.
Placing the blanket and the cooler in the bed of the truck, she stepped onto the bumper and grabbed the side of the truck to pull up. âSince when do I need help climbing into the back of your truck?â she asked. âBut thank you,â she added, reaching down to take the other blanket from him. âI have always appreciated your good manners. Especially since I have been old enough to notice the opposite sex,â she quipped.
Tyler climbed up to help her spread a blanket over the hay they had placed in the bed before leaving her house.
âIâm glad you thought about putting some hay down to make this more comfortable,â she praised him. âJust donât let me fall asleep! Itâs almost eleven, and you know what a hard time I have staying awake past ten.â
âI will not let you fall asleep,â he promised. âThis night is too big. After graduating yesterday and opting out of prom, we are going to make this night one that we never forget.â Tyler left out the fact that Amanda was leaving tomorrow, and it would be their last night together for a while. Neither one of them needed any reminding.
She crawled onto the blanket. âI forgot to grab the pillows.â
âNo problem. Iâll get them.â Tyler jumped from the truck and opened the cab door, pulling two pillows from the back floorboard. He tossed them into the bed and climbed back in, settling in beside Amanda, who was already lying on her back, gazing at the stars.
âMeteor!â she said, pointing straight up as she grabbed a pillow, placing it behind her head.
âNo way!â Tyler teased, positioning his pillow and lying down beside her. âYouâre not allowed to see meteors before I do.â
âYeah? Tell all that debris from comet Halley to just hold on,â she laughed.
âI know, right?â Tyler finished getting comfortable. Becoming very still, he sighed, âOkay. The meteors may continue.â
Amanda laughed again.
They watched in quiet anticipation. It was only a few minutes before the next one shot across the sky.
âWhoa!â they said in unison.
âThat was awesome,â Amanda marveled.
Similar comments continued for the next hour, interspersed between quiet conversation about the new chapter ahead of them and the life they were leaving behind.
